American artist Mia Tavonatti is the winner of the ArtPrize 2011. The event was held from September 29th to October 9th . The competition, created by Rick DeVos, is open to artists from around the world who can register and go to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Deliberately open and multicultural, this event was a great success since 1500 artists coming from forty different countries competed this year. The jury of this competition is none other than the public. In this third edition 382,000 people have submitted their votes.
Mia Tovanatti has had her art piece, Crucifixion, obtaining the majority of the votes. It’s a huge mosaic altarpiece – a technique which the artist is fond of - commissioned by a Catholic church in California. Many debates and controversies have animated conversations in the event corridors as noted by Rick DeVos during the ceremony awards.
ArtPrize’s success is confirmed with nearly 500,000 visitors recorded in this edition, according to organizers.
