Pierre Omidyar, founder of Ebay.inc, has donated 3 million dollars to the American Friends of the Louvre for the creation of a donation fund with the objective of building up educational programs on Persian art culture.
The objective is to draw attention to the Persian art collections of the Louvre, which will inaugurate a new section on Islamic art next year.
The American Friends of the Louvre was founded in 2002 to provide Americans with the chance of supporting the museum. The mission of the organisation is to allow the Louvre to improve its educational support, English audio tours, partnerships between the Louvre and American institutions as well as helping the Louvre finance its projects.
The donation was made possible by the Roshan Cultural Heritage. The gift will therefore be named after creator Dr. Elahé Mir-Djalali Omidyar, Pierre Omidyar’s mother. The Louvre will also name its gallery dedicated to the Near East after her.
