In Dubai, a book has just been released showcasing the work of numerous Pakistani artists. It ambitiously aims to chart the development of new art in Asia. The book was published by the Fomma Trust (Foundation for Museum of Modern Art) based in Karachi.
Written by Salwat Ali, the book entitled, Making Waves-Contemporary Art in Pakistan
, was launched at the XVA Gallery, Dubai International Finance Centre.
The book delves into numerous artistic media and varied expressions, ranging from modern contemporary miniatures, multimedia projects, drawing, painting, sculpture, print media, video and ceramics. A main them in the book is the common forces at work between the art of most Asian countries, including Pakistan.
Mutual influences also include, unpredictable political conditions, religious restraints, socio-economic hardships, violence and state censorship. Caught in a net between tradition and modernity, is art evolving in an atmosphere of turmoil and confusion?
