USA: Artists consider masculine identity in sports

Published on Thursday, July 21st, 2011
Art and sports: as opposite as North and South? A traveling exhibition in the states, "Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sports”, is proving to be baffling, exciting, one of its kind and offensive to some.

Showing through August 7 at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, the visitors have a different take on the connection. Through their artworks, many of the artists critique social and cultural ideals of masculinity, exactly that which Pittsburgh sports teams have represented for decades.

Through a diverse range of artists, mediums and styles, mixed messages about gender, sexuality and exploitation are consistent throughout the show. How essential are sports to mainstream ideals of American masculine identity?
